HENRIK LARSSON netted twice as Celtic suffered a heartbreaking Uefa Cup final defeat to Porto in 2003.

But Alan Thompson also hit the target — to a startled Jose Mourinho’s cost.

The Porto boss was in the wrong place at the wrong time for Thompson to silence him.

The former Celtic ace recalled: “When we went to the final, the locals had never seen anything like it.

“Seville was taken over by 80,000 Celtic supporters, and Uefa and Fifa awarded the Fair Play Award to Celtic for “extraordinarily loyal and sporting behaviour”.

“The Spaniards had never seen an invasion like it and there were no arrests or any trouble.

“For as good as everything was over in Seville for the  preparation, I’ll never understand the suits the club provided for us — black suits which were 100-per-cent wool!

“We were all sweltering sitting on the coach going to the game, all of us shouting to the driver to put the air-con on.

“The Porto squad were walking about in shorts and T-shirts and we were walking around in the boiling hot sun dressed in black wool.

“Porto were a good team but their boss was an arrogant big mouth — the self- proclaimed Special One, Jose Mourinho.

“I don’t think we deserved to go in at half-time a goal down, so there was a bit of a fracas in the tunnel.

“Mourinho was an arrogant so-and-so. I can’t remember who started a scuffle, but I had a full bottle of Lucozade.

“When Jose was going off on one, I stood back, aimed for his face and squirted this drink right at him — and it got him full on.

All the big stories and secrets from ex-Celtic star Alan Thompson’s autobiography

“I wasn’t sticking about to see the aftermath and I did a runner into our dressing room.

“I’m sure Jose must remember me blasting him but what it did was cause more havoc among the players.

“If there was a problem before I came along then I only made it worse.

“I pretty much just lobbed a grenade in the heat of the moment.

“I imagine you all remember just how much cheating was going on from the Porto team that evening.

“Most of our players were becoming seriously annoyed and emotions were bubbling over.

“It was obvious how much of a top-quality side that Porto team were. They didn’t need to act the way they were.

“One of my lasting images was just seeing the gaffer on his knees looking up to the skies on the pitch, very much a broken man.

“It just annoyed me the way they cheated to get the win.”
