TRANSFER STRATEGY

By Robert Martin

ROBBIE NEILSON has revealed Hearts want a striker and defender to flesh out their new formation.

The Jambos employed a 3-4-3 as they dispatched Cove Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup.

And Neilson saw enough to suggest it’s worth sticking with going into the Premiership campaign.

Left-back Stephen Kingsley played on the left of a three with Craig Halkett and John Souttar.

But Neilson is open to the idea of signing another centre half having lost Christophe Berra.

He told the Edinburgh Evening News: “We just felt that the 3-4-3 is quite suited to the players we have.

“We have spoken about trying to get a left-sided centre-half in but I think Stephen Kingsley can play in that position.

“We will still look to recruit there but this way of playing suits us.

“During the season we will change into different shapes but I’m pleased with it so far. The key is that we get people high up the pitch.

“What we don’t want to do is drop off into a 5-4-1. We need to put pressure on people so there is still work to be done.”

Hearts have already added keeper Ross Stewart, winger Josh Ginnelly and left-back Alex Cochrane this close season.

And Neilson also confirmed a front man is a priority as he looks to make his promoted side a force to be reckoned with.

He said: “We are still looking at the attacking areas. We’ve got Euan Henderson, Liam Boyce, Gary Mackay-Steven, Josh Ginnelly and Armand Gnanduillet, but I think we need another couple in there to give us more energy going forward. We will continue to look.”
