BASEL have hinted that Celtic and Albian Ajeti may have to drop their financial demands if the Swiss hitman wants to return to his former club.

The former West Ham star was a big player for Basel in two spells at the club before he won a big-money move to the Hammers and then onto Celtic in a £5 million deal in August 2020.

But his move has not worked out at Parkhead and he appears to be well down the pecking order under Ange Postecoglou.

He hasn’t started a league game since September.

Basel are currently seven points behind Swiss League leaders FC Zurich and are desperate for new firepower after selling Arthur Cabral to Fiorentina.

Ajeti has been strongly linked with a move away from Celtic to be his replacement in the Swiss media.

But the club’s sporting director Philipp Kaufmann has suggested there are financial obstacles in the way.

He said: “We have our own financial framework.

“We need a strong striker who attacks the deep spaces and we need to replace Arthur Cabral as a matter of urgency.”

Since making the move to Celtic, Ajeti has made 47 appearances in all competitions and has scored nine goals in the process.

Meanwhile, Giorgos Giakoumakis has thanked Postecoglou for getting him through his torrid start to life at Parkhead.

The Greek striker now hopes to put his days of dealing with injury behind him and start a regular run of games.

He said: “He was really important for me since the first day I arrived.

“He was really patient with me and my injuries and he was always saying to me, ‘I really believe in you, I’m waiting for you, try to get fit’.

“That was really important for me. It made me more determined.

“Every player needs to feel important in the squad when he’s not in the team, so it helped me a lot, a manager that made me feel important even when I wasn’t playing and I was injured.

“It really gave me motivation to work even more and work harder to gain my fitness back.

“It was quite difficult at the start.

“You try to adjust to the new environment and you want to be with the squad to get to know your team-mates and get some games.

“You have to get to know them well and know them better on the pitch, too.

“It was really difficult for me because before I even started playing I was injured twice.

“I didn’t have the chance to play with my team-mates and let them get to know the style of my play or try to score some goals.

“It was really hard for me. I just hope that this belongs in the past now and I can move on.”
