Barnsley have appointed Markus Schopp as their new manager on a three-year contract until June 2024.
Schopp joins Barnsley after departing Austrian Bundesliga’s TSV Hartberg where he guided the club to UEFA Europa League qualification in 2019-20 season, only to crash out 3-2 away to Poland’s Piast Gliwice in the Second Qualifying Round on their European debut.
The Austrian replaces Valerien Ismael after the French manager was poached by West Bromwich Albion last week.
Speaking on his move to the Tykes, Schopp said: “It’s great to come to a country where football is so big, so traditional, especially in South Yorkshire. There are so many clubs and they are so famous and Barnsley, for me, is one of those teams.
“I will help Barnsley get to where they have been in the last year, I will do everything for that.”
Schopp has already commenced work on the Tykes’ pre-season testing programme and conducted introduction meetings with his coaching staff.
Barnsley Co-Chairman, Paul Conway spoke of feeling “very excited” to have secured Schopp’s services with the hope that he will help “continue the growth” of the club after qualifying for last season’s Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs in fifth place.
Conway also noted Schopp’s ability to develop youth players in a first-team squad at Sturm Graz and TSV Hartberg, which he believes to be a “significant” quality of Barnsley with various young players like Jack Walton, Toby Sibbick, Callum Styles and Victor Adeboyejo in the squad.
Schopp enjoyed a 16 year playing career largely based in Austria playing for Sturm Graz across two stints with spells away at Hamburger and Brescia either side of his time in Styria before concluding his career at New York Red Bulls on loan from Red Bull Salzburg prior to retirement in 2007.
Schopp will begin his first season in charge of the Tykes away to Cardiff City on weekend of 6-9 August 2021, before making his home debut in the dugout of Oakwell on Saturday 14 August against Coventry City.
