Barnsley have signed Obbi Oulare from Standard Liege on a three-year contract until June 2024.

This move sees Oulare return to English football following a four-year spell at Watford in which he only made three appearances amidst three separate loan spells in Belgium as well as Netherlands’ Willem II before his loan at Liege was converted into a permanent deal in 2019.

Excited to make his return to English soil despite Barnsley still sitting in the Championship after losing last season’s Play-Offs, Oulare has vowed to try and bring success, saying: “I will do my best, work hard and hopefully, with the rest of the team, that will bring great results.”

Oulare also revealed that he monitored the Tykes closely last season and is keen to help them improve, commenting: “I have been following the results really closely over the last season and I’m hoping to achieve the same, or even better this year.”

The Belgian forward also spoke of his desire to meet the fans at Oakwell and soak up what he knows is a “great atmosphere” in the UK at football stadiums, having previously featured in three games for Watford during 2015-16 season.

Barnsley Co-Chairman, Paul Conway added that the Tykes have been tracking Oulare’s progress in recent months and is “delighted” to complete his transfer after undertaking “seven months of tough negotiations with Standard Liege.”

Conway also pointed to Oulare’s top-flight experience across Europe and in UEFA Champions and Europa League competitions respectively, stating that the Belgian boasts “significant experience” which will benefit the Tykes as they seek to mount another promotion challenge.

Oulare could make his debut for Barnsley on Saturday 31 July in the club’s final friendly, which coincidentally sees the Tykes visit Oulare’s former club – Watford at Vicarage Road.

Barnsley then start their Championship and Carabao Cup campaigns away at Cardiff and Bolton respectively, with Oulare’s home debut at Oakwell set for Saturday 14 August against Coventry City.
