Aston Villa join the hunt for Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson

Aston Villa have joined the transfer race for Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson ahead of the summer transfer window.

Victor Nelsson, 23, came through the ranks at FC Nordsjealland and made 98 appearances for the club before joining FC Copenhagen in 2019. After two solid seasons with FC Copenhagen, the Danish international sealed a transfer to Galatasaray last summer.

The 23-year-old has become a pillar of strength at the back for Galatasaray, featuring 42 times so far in all competitions. While Galatasaray have endured an indifferent campaign, Nelsson has quietly impressed in defence, which has seen him attract interest from Aston Villa, Fiorentina and AC Milan. In fact, Aston Villa are set to watch the Dane this weekend in the Intercontinental derby against Fenerbahce.

The Villans signed Lucas Digne, Calum Chambers and Philippe Coutinho—albeit on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy—during the January transfer window, backing Steven Gerrard firmly in the transfer market. And the Midlands club will have the funds available for the upcoming transfer window, as Gerrard looks to rebuild the squad.

Ezri Konsa on his way out of Villa Park?

Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa has emerged as a potential defensive target for Arsenal, as manager Mikel Arteta prepares for a big summer ahead.

Konsa has been at Villa since arriving from Brentford in 2019. He has since forged a strong partnership with skipper Tyrone Mings at the heart of Villa’s defence. Although the 24-year-old is contracted at Villa Park until 2026, Gerrard has told the centre-back’s entourage that the club are ready to listen to offers for him this summer, providing Arsenal a welcome boost in their pursuit of the former England under-21 international.

Should the Villans go for Victor Nelsson?

Defence is an area Aston Villa will still be looking to reinforce in the summer. Steven Gerrard was keen to sign Joe Gomez from Liverpool in January but the Reds were not willing to sell or loan their defender in midst of their title challenge. Instead, the Midlands club signed Calum Chambers on a free from Arsenal to replace Axel Tuanzebe following the termination of his loan from Manchester United.

Now with Konsa on the radar of Arsenal, the Lions are scouring the market to find his replacement. In that regard, Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson would be a good fit at Villa Park.

In terms of age and potential, Nelsson ticks a lot of boxes for Aston Villa. At 23, he is at the right age to make the jump from the Super Lig to an even more competitive league such as the Premier League. The Danish international could potentially replace Konsa on the right-hand side of Villa’s defence and form a strong understanding with Mings.

However, it is unlikely Nelsson will come cheap as he has a contract that runs until 2026 at the Nef Stadyumu and also has admirers at AC Milan and Fiorentina. For Villa to sign the ex-FC Copenhagen star, they must be prepared to spend a substantial amount of money.
