BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — Nicolas Castro scored a first-half brace as Newell’s Old Boys shocked title contenders Lanus with a 2-1 away win in their Argentine Primera Division clash on Monday.
Castro rifled home a first-time effort from the edge of the 18-yard box after Maxi Comba’s cross from the right flank.
The 20-year-old doubled the visitors’ lead when he took one touch to control a Gabriel Compagnucci through ball before curling a shot into the top-right corner.
The hosts pulled a goal back after some tenacious defending from Angel Gonzalez, who dispossessed Facundo Mansilla before providing an inch-perfect cross for Jose Lopez.
The latter left goalkeeper Alan Aguerre sprawled on the turf with a swivel of the hips before sweeping a left-footed strike into the far corner.
Lanus missed a chance to stay on level terms with leaders Talleres Cordoba and are now fourth with 23 points from 12 fixtures. Newell’s are 14th with 15 points form 12 outings.
In other Argentine Primera Division matches on Monday, Banfield drew 0-0 at Defensa y Justicia, Rosario Central secured a 1-0 home win over San Lorenzo and Gimnasia prevailed1 1-0 at home to Union.
