Chelsea seem have their confidence back after a 4-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League, but the loss of two players to injury in the same game is undoubtedly a blow.
So it will be interesting to see how the team responds in their next few games. Will they be defiant, and battle back against the bad news, or will they let it be an excuse for further slow and sloppy performances?
Their chances of winning the league took a battering through their last few fixtures, according to bet365 sportsbook. It wasn’t just a loss to Man City that was the problem, it was the tepid attacking showing in games all season leading up to that point.
Liverpool and Manchester City have looked better than ever through the same period, so it’s no surprise to see the Blues’ title chances apparently fading accordingly.
If the Blues can get through these next few games without any further damage however, they will still be in the race. Let’s not forget, they’re top of the table right now, despite a tricky opening run of fixtures. They’re into the softer stuff now, and have to make it count.
Players who have been out in the cold will now get their chances, and not in meaningless cup games either. Peripheral figures will be called upon to perform in the Premier League now, and the chase for the title is in their hands.
So far, they’ve largely stepped up. Trevoh Chalobah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Malang Sarr weren’t expected to play much of a part this season, but already each of them have contributed vital moments to the team already.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz will now all have to step into the breach after riding the bench for the majority of the season so far, and they all certainly have the talent to do it.
If they can score the goals, and the defence can keep their superb record, we will be there fighting to the title until the very end.
The game against Norwich was a great start – Kai Havertz was about the only player who didn’t score, in fact. Callum Hudson-Odoi looked back to his best right away, restored to the left wing, and Mason Mount finally found his shooting boots – and then some!
As we’ve come to expect, the defenders were immaculate once again.
After a few dodgy weeks, an 11-0 aggregate swing in the course of 7 days was just the remedy this team needed – and those title odds will have shrunk once again.
