Manchester United journalist Carl Anka has been discussing the future of Paul Pogba at the club in what is a very critical summer for him.
Ever since he returned to Old Trafford in the summer of 2016, there have been question marks surrounding him.
The numbers that he has produced have been reasonable, with 38 goals and 45 assists in the five seasons that he has been back at the club, but at the same time, there have been issues with former boss Jose Mourinho, criticism from pundits and questions about his attitude, all making it seem like the move might not have been totally worth the money they forked out for him.
His contract at the club is officially up next summer, and although he has reportedly been offered one, there are some who think that now might be the time for Manchester United to cash in on him whilst they still can.
Speaking about the situation on Ask Ornstein, Anka seemed to hint that he believed an agreement would be reached between Pogba and Manchester United, but that the club might have to do him some favours first:
“This is going to go right down to the wire in my interpretation, I can’t see any quick fix to this one. I think it’s potentially relying on any other possible signings coming through the door.
“So, if Manchester United were to try and retain Paul Pogba, more work would need to be done, not just in terms of contract negotiations for him, but would also need to be done in terms of recruiting the sort of player to properly allow Pogba to play closer to his France iteration.”

Should United hand Pogba a new deal?

With six goals and 10 assists last season in all competitions, it’s not like his recent form has been terrible, so it’s clear to see that Pogba still has some use for Manchester United. If his numbers were half as good, then it might be worth considering selling him.
But if Manchester United can bring someone in to play alongside him, similar to the role N’Golo Kante does for France to allow him that little bit more freedom and just bring out that little bit more in his game, then it’s a move that they have to make whilst they still can.
Keep Pogba happy by bringing someone in, then get him to sign a new deal, and hopefully he’ll be able to kick on in his career and help push the club towards ending their relative trophy drought.
