Both Switzerland and Turkey have failed to reach the high standards they set in qualifying, mustering just one point and one goal between them in their first two games at Euro 2020.
However, with four of the best third-placed teams qualifying for the Last 16, both sides are still in with a shot of making the knockout stages.
Third is the best Turkey can hope for after defeats against Italy and Wales, but the Swiss still have a chance, albeit a slim one, of automatic qualification.
They must win by as many goals as possible, hope that Italy defeat Wales, and pray they can secure the six-goal swing needed to overtake the Welsh on goal difference.
Last Three Matches
Switzerland 1-2 Turkey (European Championships – June 11, 2008)
The co-hosts of Euro 2008 became the first team to exit the tournament after defeat against Turkey in their second Group A game.
In the middle of a torrential downpour, Hakan Yakin put the Swiss ahead in the 32nd minute, but it was nothing but pain in the rain from that point on.
Semih Senturk equalised for Turkey early in the second half, and Arda Turan broke Swiss hearts with a deflected injury-time strike.
Turkey 4-2 Switzerland (World Cup Play-Off Second Leg – November 16, 2005)
This match may well be remembered more for an almighty brawl in the tunnel following the game, although it was not without incident on the pitch.
And Swiss fans will certainly have fond memories of this clash, as they qualified for the 2006 World Cup on away goals, despite losing on the night.
Alex Frei had converted a second-minute penalty to give the hosts a dream start, but former Middlesbrough striker Tuncay scored a brace and Necati Ates netted a penalty to revive Turkish hopes of qualification.
Switzerland’s Marco Streller halved the deficit in the 84th minute, leaving Turkey needing two late goals.
Tuncay managed to nab one of them, completing his hat-trick in the process, but it was too little too late and the jubilant Swiss were on their way to the 2006 World Cup.
Switzerland 2-0 Turkey (World Cup Play-Off First Leg – November 12, 2005)
The first leg had been a far more sedate affair, with Switzerland securing a comfortable victory.
Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a deft header from a free kick.
And Valon Behrami added a second with four minutes to go, smashing home at the back post before being consumed by a textbook pile-on.

A win should do for Swiss
Since his appointment in 2014, Vladimir Petkovic has led Switzerland into the Last 16 of both the 2016 World Cup and 2018 European Championships.
After a draw against Wales and defeat against Italy, a win against Turkey should keep that run going, with four points unlikely to be bettered by any other third-placed sides.
And with the Swiss having gone eight games unbeaten prior to their loss to Italy, Petkovic’s men are more than capable of getting the win they need in Baku.
Playing for pride
As poor as Turkey have been, victory against Switzerland could see them sneak into the Last 16, and that should see them put in an improved performance here.
We’re not convinced it will be enough to prevent a third straight loss, but at the very least they should find the net for the first time this tournament.
Switzerland to win and both teams to score is an 12/5 shot.
Goalscorer bets
No one in a Turkey shirt will be keener to put things right than skipper Burak Yilmaz, who is enjoying a career renaissance at the grand old age of 35.
Yilmaz played a key role in Lille’s shock title win and was expected to continue that form after netting in Turkey’s final pre-tournament friendly.
It hasn’t worked out that way, but Yilmaz hasn’t gone three games without scoring since December, and at 9/4 remains the most likely of the Turkish players to find the net.
Switzerland, meanwhile, will need Haris Seferovic to rediscover his confidence in front of goal.
The Benfica ace has been prolific in the Portuguese league but has been wasteful at the Euros so far. He is 17/4 for the first goal against Turkey.
