Prize Money – Tour de Ski 2020-2021

Tour de Ski prize money increased for the 2020-2021 season, but is still lagging far behind what it used to be in the early years.

The prize money for the top skiers of Tour de Ski has decreased radically over the years. For example, the winner of the tour now receives 35 000 euros less than ten years ago. In many other sports, such as biathlon, the situation is reversed, with prize money having increased.

For the 2020-2021 season Tour de Ski prize money increased quite a bit however, but is still lagging far behind what it used to be in the early years. The raises in prize money might be in response to the athletes who have criticized the decreases in the previous years.

One of Sweden’s figureheads of skiing, Charlotte Kalla does not believe the situation will change any time soon.

– It is difficult to believe there could be any rapid change, when nothing much has happened for many years. I can only hope things will get better in the future, when I’m no longer part of it, Kalla stated in 2018.

The situation has been a topic of conversation in skiing circles before. Martin Johnsrud Sundby for example said during the 2018 season that skiing must be the only profession where top salary has actually fallen from 1995 to today.
