The World Surf League’s Maui Pro has been suspended after a shark attack in Honolua Bay.

A recreational surfer was taken to hospital and required surgery after he was attacked paddling out on Wednesday morning.

The attack on the 56-year-old man caused the season opener to be put on hold due to safety concerns.

The semi-finals were scheduled for Wednesday (Australian time).

The women’s top surfing competition featured Australian stars Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright in the semis.
