The second stage of the Greek League has started. As it was planned at the beginning of the season, the teams are split into four groups in this stage.
Four teams that won the most points in the first stage are in the group for places 1st – 4th, the following four in the group for places 5th-8th, etc.
All points won in the first phase have been carried to the second.
The derby of the weekend was the clash between the two best Greek clubs. Olympiacos earned an away win over Vouliagmeni 12:9.
2021/22 Greek League, the second phase, Day 1
Group 1 (places 1st – 4th)
Vouliagmeni – Olympiacos 9:12 (2:3, 3:2, 2:4, 2:3)
Apollon Smyrnis – Panionios 11:12 (2:2, 2:4, 4:4, 3:2)
The derby in Vouliagmeni’s pool saw a few twists and turns, but Olympiacos, led by Konstantinos Genidounias and Filip Filipovic, controlled the match for most of the second half. The visitors led 3:2 at halftime. Vouliagmeni opened the second quarter with three straight goals and went to 5:3 (11th minute). However, Olympiacos didn’t need a lot of time to catch up with the big rival. The visitors leveled at 5:5 in the 13th minute of the game.
The teams were in a neck-and-neck race until 7:7. At the finish of the third quarter, Genidounias netted two goals, and Olympiacos entered the final quarter with a 9:7 advantage. Genidounias stretched the margin to three early in the fourth quarter (10:7). The hosts couldn’t come back. The contest was over two minutes before the end when Filipovic scored from a counter-attack for 12:8.
Only four players of Olympiacos got on the scoresheet. Genidounias scored five goals for Olympiacos, Filipovic found the net four times. Fountoulis netted two, and Dervisis one goal. Kalogeropoulos and Skoumpakis scored two goals each for Vouliagmeni.
Panionios defeated Apollon Smyrnis in a very tight game. Panionios led 11:8. Apollon leveled at 11:11 with 01:43 minutes to go. But, five seconds before the buzzer, Panionios’ Mavrakis scored for 12:11. Moskov led the winning team with four goals. Gusarov scored three for Apollon.
