Mataro stay top with straight-forward win at Rubi

C.N Mataro remain top of the Division de Honor in Spain with a comfortable victory over Rubi. It was the Russian, Bella Markoch, who did most of the damage for the league leaders, grabbing five goals in the match.

C.N. Rubi 8-19 C.N. Mataro (2-5, 2-6, 2-4, 2-4)

Rubi: E. Jimenez, A. Roldan 1, D. Gerschovsky, L. Rion, M. Manchego, C. Abellan, E. Ruiz Barril 3, A. Rodriguez, E. Vesperinas 1, I. Abril, L. Soriano, A. Trivino 2, A. Copado

Despite Rubi taking the lead through their young superstar, Elena Ruiz, and scoring again through Elena Vesperinas Sanchez, Mataro got going in the game halfway through the first quarter with an intensity that could not be matched by the home side. Markoch snatched two of her five in the opening period while Anna Espar converted from a five metre penalty.

Markoch then added three goals quickly in the second period, while Espar netted two more – another of which was from a 5m penalty.

Anna Roldan scored early in the third quarter to give the home side a bit of impetus, however the other Russian in the squad, Anna Timofeeva replied instantly with a great finish, before Gual, Bertran and Van de Kraats made the result beyond doubt.

Viv Sevenich weighed in on the goal scoring with two in the last period to continue her good form this season. Ruiz Barril netted twice in the last quarter with the last goal of the game coming from a Ruiz penalty 15 seconds from time.

Up next for Dani Ballart’s side is an away trip to Sant Feliu this weekend, while Rubi will be back at Can Roses to try to compete with a solid-looking Mediterrani side on Saturday.
