The 2021 LEN Super Cup, an encounter between the European champion and the LEN Euro Cup winner, will probably be held in Szolnok on December 20.
The Hungarian website Vlv.hu published that the participating clubs – European champion Pro Recco and LEN Euro Cup winner Szolnok had agreed on the date and the venue of the match. Total Waterpolo’s sources confirmed the news.
The clubs informed LEN about the agreement, and if LEN approves, the game will be played on December 20. It’s expected that LEN will accept Recco’s and Szolnok’s proposal.
Pro Recco won the 2021 Champions League with a perfect 13-0 record (10 wins in the group and three at the Final Eight). The Italians beat Ferencvaros (9:6) in the final in Belgrade.
Szolnok clinched the LEN Euro Cup after a big battle with OSC Budapest. Szolnok defeated OSC after a penalty shootout in the return leg.
The LEN Super Cup was founded in 1976. Between 1976 and 2002, the European champions and winners of the LEN Cup Winner’s Cup participated in the Super Cup. The Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued in 2002, and after that, winners of the Champions League and the LEN Euro Cup (LEN Trophy) have been playing for the Super Cup.
Hungarian Ferencvaros won the previous two editions of the Super Cup. In the season 2017/18, Ferencvaros qualified for the Super Cup as the LEN Euro Cup winner and defeated European champion Olympiacos in a match played in Budapest (11:9 after a penalty shootout). In the following year, Ferencvaros secured a spot in the Super Cup as the European champion and beat Marseille, the 2019 LEN Euro Cup winner, 14:11. That game was played in Marseille.
