On day six in Sibenik, we finally have confirmation of our European Junior Women quarter-finalists. Italy will face Spain after beating France in a thrilling last game of the day, whilst Israel’s convincing win over Germany earns them a fiesty quarter-final meeting with Hungary. The hosts, Croatia, saw off their nearby neighbours Serbia to book a tough-looking quarter-final with Greece, and a dominant display from the Dutch means they will have their work cut out when they face Russia in their final-eight fixture.
Round of Sixteen Results:
Israel 16-8 Germany (6-2, 2-0, 3-6, 5-0)
Israel have eased into the final eight with a comfortable victory over a disappointing Germany. The side from the far-east of Europe have been hugely impressive, and this group of players such as Dar Menakerman and Alma Yaacobi will no doubt be a part of the Israeli senior national team for many years to come
Croatia 17-9 Serbia (4-3, 3-2, 4-0, 6-4)
The hosts Croatia easily beat Serbia in the big Balkan derby of the day courtesy of a great individual performance from Magdalena Butic. It will be a tall order for the Croats to win against Greece tomorrow, but nonetheless, they have really been an excellent advert for the women’s game in Croatia.
Netherlands 24-3 Slovakia (7-0, 6-0, 5-2, 6-1)
The Netherlands hardly broke a sweat in their fixture against Slovakia today. Lola Moolhuijzen netted a record eleven goals in the game for the Dutch, as they face the daunting prospect of an undefeated Russia in the quarter-finals.
Italy 12-8 France (2-2, 1-2, 6-1, 3-3)
Three hat-tricks from Italy’s Morena Leone, Grace Marussi and Emma De March helped them on their way to defeat France. All eyes will now be on Italy’s quarter-final with Spain, while France take on Serbia to finish the highest they can – ninth.
Today’s Other Results:
Great Britain 11-10 Turkey (3-2, 2-5, 4-0, 2-3)
At the lower end of the tournament, Great Britain have a very welcomed first win of the competition over Turkey thanks to another four goals from their leading light, Caitlin Silk. Great Britain will finish 17th at the games providing they beat Romania on Saturday.
Czech Republic 14-9 Malta (2-1, 2-3, 4-3, 6-2)
A five-goal haul from Iva Drnkova, as well as hat-tricks from Josefina Hola and Lucie Zelinkova, secured a well-deserved win for the Czech Republic over Malta. They have set up a 13th-14th place final with Ukraine tomorrow.
Ukraine 15-7 Bulgaria (2-2, 3-1, 5-1, 5-3)
Five goals from Bulgaria’s Ivet Dimitrova was not enough to secure a victory against Ukraine – who now, as mentioned, face the Czech Republic tomorrow. Bulgaria will hope their last game against Malta for the 15th-16th place will end their tournament on a high.
