OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women’s tennis team did not drop a set and lost a total of four games on the way to a 7-0 sweep of Doane on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The Bluejays also celebrated the accomplishments of Meredith Benson, Gabby O’Connor and Sarah Wilcox as part of Senior Day.
Creighton improved to 11-7 with the victory during its final match of the regular season.
Senior’s Meredith Benson and Gabby O’Connor started the afternoon with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles before Kate Krueger and Valerie Negin won 6-0 at the top doubles position to clinch the first point of the day. The duo of Sarah Wilcox and Malvika Shukla also claimed a 6-0 victory at the No. 2 doubles slot for the Bluejays,
The Bluejays lost a total of four games during singles play as all six Bluejays captured straight-sets wins.
Shukla got things started with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 singles slot, while Negin claimed a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at the No. 2 spot before Sarah Wilcox sealed the overall match for Creighton with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position.
Krueger made quick work of her opponent with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top singles slot, while Benson and freshman Allison Wilcox each picked up 6-0, 6-0 straight-set wins to finish the match.
“It was great to have our seniors go out with a regular season win,” said head coach Tom Lilly. “Gabby, Meredith and Sarah have been such a fun trio and are everything you look for in a student-athlete. We will miss them dearly next year.”
Creighton returns to the courts next Thursday for the start of the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, South Carolina.
