MUNCIE – Winning streaks aside, the Ball State women’s tennis team got a lot done in a pair of wins over IUPUI over the weekend. After winning 6-1 on Friday, the Cardinals cruised to a 7-0 win on Saturday afternoon at the outdoor courts on campus. Instead of the results, the key word there would be “outdoors.”
“The value in this weekend was getting everyone some experience,” head coach Max Norris said. “We got to play one match indoors and one outdoors, and that is good preparation for the conference season. Every opponent brings a different challenge. We played well today and it was amazing to be outside. For everyone here at ball state to make it happen for us, it was great and we’re very grateful.”
The Cardinals (9-2) have the momentum of a nine-match win streak heading into conference play, and now have the experience of playing outside. Indoor tennis is much more of a power game with quicker points, while playing outside requires greater focus.
“We were very consistent, especially dealing with the conditions outside. we always stress competing every point. Points are quicker indoors. When playing outdoors, you need more focus. Shots tht are winners inside are just regular shots outside because of the air.”
The Cardinals made the adjustment to the conditions, winning their serves and returns and dominating the doubles point. BSU then swept singles play and only lost 11 games as a team on the day. Norris said everyone across the board played well and gaining the experience for later was valuable. He said Rebecca Herrington freshman Silvia Martinez stood out.
Rebecca did a great job lobbing and she handled her business in singles. Silvia did a great job playing doubles with Jessica Braun, handling her nerves playing No. 1 doubles as a freshman. She was very businesslike.”
With all of the current challenges in health and scheduling, Norris said he was “very grateful for more opportunities to play.” Those opportunities now will mean more as the Cardinals enter conference play next weekend against Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. BSU has EMU Friday, March 12 and Buffalo on March 14.
