Uvaldeans compete in regional tennis this week

Uvalde High School tennis players will be at Corpus Christi’s H-E-B Tennis Center Wednesday for the start of the two-day Class 4A Region IV tennis tournament.

Ty Gonzales, Elizaria Hernandez, Hope Dube, Jack Brock, and Jonathan Garcia will represent UHS in the regional tourney.

They were among the top players in recent District 30-4A tennis tournament competition.

Gonzales won the boys’ singles title with his 6-0 and 6-1 victory over Pearsall’s Philip Lange.

In the semi-finals, Gonzales shut out Hondo’s Reese Simpson, 6-0 and 6-0.

In an all-UHS girls’ singles final match, Hernandez topped Dube by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

Hernandez beat Hondo’s Lindy Berger, 6-1 and 6-2, in one semi-final match, while Dube won a split-sets decision, 6-1, 5-7, and 6-1, over Hondo’s Felicia Alvarado.

Brock and Garcia captured first-place honors in boys’ doubles.

They downed Leonardo Lopez and Logan Kindred of Hondo, 6-2 and 6-4, in the championship match.

In the semi-final round, Brock and Garcia blanked Tollett and Perez of Carrizo Springs by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Coach Terri Rambie’s UHS players will be going up against the top players from Region IV, including players from Boerne, Corpus Christi Calallen, Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway, Fredericksburg, and Wimberley.

The top finishers will earn a berth in the state tournament scheduled for next month.
