FALL RIVER — The Durfee girls tennis team opened the spring season on Thursday.
Unfortunately, visiting New Bedford spoiled the debut of first-year head coach Job Roach as the Lady Hilltoppers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Whalers at Bicentennial Park.
Durfee’s first doubles team of Olivia Rumsey and Brooke Tabicas won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The second doubles team of Emily Coelho and Kayleen Verdadeiro were winners, 6-1, 6-1.
Dalia Karam, Ashley DePina Nunes and Morgan Ledo each dropped their single matches.

The Hilltoppers won their first match of the spring, beating league opponent New Bedford.
The match was played with four singles matches and one doubles match due to six active players per team.
Chris Panchley defeated Dontae Gibau at first singles for Durfee (1-0; 1-0 SEC), 6-0, 6-1. William Rumsey beat Micah Ortiz at second singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Jack Fitzgerald was victorious at third singles against Joey Damasio, 6-0, 6-1. Jesse Tamba won his match against Danny Lopez, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Jack Matos and Mesa Dinez def Max Viega and Henry AJ, 6-1, 6-0.

The Spartans captured their first win of the season, beating Archbishop Williams.
Seamus Marshall picked up the win on the hill after going six innings, allowing five hits and 12 strikeouts.
Stang’s offense generated 17 hits as a team.
Offensive stars for the Spartans were Justin Gouveia (four hits and run scored), Ben Saunders (three hits, two runs scored and an RBI), Frankie Manon (two hits with three RBI) and Griffin Ferreira (two hits and two runs scored).
Ryan Martins, Seamus Marshall, Ben LeBoeuf and Cam Letourneau each finished with a hit. Stang (1-0) hosts Cardinal Spellman today.

The Spartans dropped their season opener to Archbishop Williams.
Sophomore Mikayla Brightman went 2-for-4, including a home run for Stang (0-1).
Sophomore Grace Motto finished with a pair of hits, including a home run. Sophomore Olivia Brousseau chipped in with a triple.

The Spartans won their spring opener against Archbishop Williams.
Joel Michaud led Stang (1-0) with six goals. Declan Markey added three goals and two assists while Ben Gowell finished with three goals and an assist. Graham Brown chipped in with a pair of goals.
Connor Araujo (two assists) and Noah Grigson each scored a goal.
Goalie Mike Jones had 13 save in his first-ever start in net.

The Case golf team lost in the semifinals today against top seed Apponequet at Lakeville Country Club.
Top scorers for the Cardinals were Caden Capaldo (40), Ben Paquette (42), Mike Cinquegrana (44), Ethan Kappas (46), Luke Escobar (46) and Sean Patota (48).
