FAIRFIELD — Prevailing in straight sets in the matches it won, the Rodriguez High girls tennis team captured a piece of its first league championship in 12 years – and first ever in the Monticello Empire League – with a 7-2 victory over Vacaville, Monday.

The Mustangs (9-1) tied Vanden for the title, having split their two matches this season. Vanden won the first, 5-4, Rodriguez the second, 6-3.

“I am very proud of my 16 girls,” Mustangs coach Sebastien Remy Said. “They played well during this unusual season and finished very strong.”

Winning in singles for the Mustangs were Bella Connerley at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2), Riley Mark at No. 4 (6-0, 6-3), Emily Hefner at No. 5 (6-3, 6-1) and Hannah Pierleoni at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4).

Doubles victors included Jacki Laffey and Kayla Lee at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2), Danielle Murphy and Julianna Roxas at No. 2 (6-2, 6-0) and Shayla Prasad and Courtney Brown at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2).

Rodriguez last won a league championship when it went 15-0 as a member of the Solano County Athletic Conference in 2009.
