Taiwan’s central bank has allowed Deutsche Bank to start trading Taiwan dollar deliverable and non-deliverable forwards again, three sources told Reuters, after it suspended them as part of a crackdown on speculation last February. The central bank issued the two-year punishment to Deutsche following a case where it said foreign banks helped grain companies engage in currency speculation through deliverable forwards, affecting the stability of Taiwan’s foreign exchange market.

CBI gets government nod to prosecute ex-Sudan Ambassador Vohra
The CBI has received sanction from the government to proceed with the prosecution of former Ambassador to Sudan Deepak Vohra and Under Secretary Ajoy Ganguly in a case of alleged financial bungling in Indian diplomatic missions there, officials said. The agency had to seek the sanction on the directions of a special court which has rejected two closure reports filed by the agency against Ganguly, who was accused of financial impropriety during his tenure as the Consul General of India at Juba, South Sudan from October, 2007 to May 6, 2009.

Pakistan has reported 3,338 new COVID-19 cases and 38 more deaths over the past 24 hours, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Monday. The country’s overall cases have increased to 1,463,111, including 1,344,403 recoveries, Xinhua reported citing NCOC.
Gold touches over one-week high as inflation concerns boost appeal
Gold prices hit a more than one-week peak on Monday, as inflationary pressures due to surging oil prices helped cushion the impact of a U.S. Treasury yield rally after an upbeat jobs report, while a drop in equities also boosted bullion’s appeal. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $1,810.85 per ounce by 0724 GMT, after hitting its highest since Jan. 27 at $1,814.91 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures rose 0.2% to $1,811.70. “The largest component of inflation currently, beyond the supply chain issues, is oil prices. And this is a problem no matter how high you move interest rates,” said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management.

Prime Minister announces ex-gratia for nine killed in AP accident
Nine people returning from a wedding were killed when a car in which they were travelling was hit by a truck in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapuram district. Father of the bride was among those killed in the accident that occurred near Budagavi village of Urvakonda mandal on Sunday night, police said. According to police the victims were returning home from a wedding in Bellary, Karnataka. The tragedy occurred when a truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the car on Anantapuram-Bellary highway between Budagavi and Kottalapalli villages.

Hong Kong’s zero-COVID strategy under pressure as cases soar
Hong Kong is expected to report a record of around 610 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, broadcaster TVB reported, in the biggest test yet for the city’s zero-COVID strategy as it grapples to contain a growing outbreak. Around 300 others were found positive in preliminary tests, TVB said, citing an unnamed source. The global financial hub, which is following mainland China’s strategy of suppressing all coronavirus outbreaks as soon as possible, has seen cases soar since January with over 2,000 infections compared with just two in December.
NCLAT to hear Amazon’s interim plea to stay CCI order
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) will hear e-commerce major Amazon’s interim plea on February 14, seeking a stay over the order passed by fair trade regulator CCI that had suspended the over two-year-old approval for its deal with Future Coupons Pvt Ltd (FCPL). A three-member bench on Monday directed to list Amazon’s plea on February 14 to pass an interim order and stay the operations of the order passed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in December last year till it finally decides the matter.

Paytm shares tumble over 7% post Q3 earnings
Shares of One97 Communications, which operates under the Paytm brand, tumbled over 7 per cent after the company reported widening of consolidated loss to Rs 778.5 crore in the December 2021 quarter. It declined 5.69 per cent to Rs 898.95 on the BSE. On the NSE, the stock tumbled 7.55 per cent to Rs 881.30.
