AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 2 University of Texas women’s tennis team posted a 7-0 victory against No. 32 Oklahoma (8-4, 0-2 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns improved to 14-1 in dual-match play this season, including a 4-0 mark in Big 12 play, and registered their eighth victory of the year against a ranked opponent.
UT has now recorded nine sweeps in its first 14 victories, including three of its first four Big 12 Conference matches. The Longhorns improved to 67-11 (.859) in dual-match singles play and a 30-4 (.882) in dual-match doubles competition.
Texas jumped to a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point for the 14th time in its first 15 dual matches. Tied at 1-1 on court 3, the freshman tandem of Charlotte Chavatipon and Peyton Stearns ran off five straight games to cruise to a 6-1 victory against Dana Guzman and Kianah Motosono. Chavatipon and Stearns won their seventh-straight match and improved to 9-1 in dual-match doubles play.
The freshman duo of Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun jumped out to a 5-1 lead before closing out a 6-3 win on court 1 against Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley to clinch the doubles point. Collins and Sun avenged their only loss in dual-match play this season, as the Corley sisters previously earned a 6-4 win in Norman on Jan. 30. Collins and Sun earned their eighth consecutive victory and moved to 10-1 in dual-match doubles play.
In singles action, No. 94 Sun claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court 3 against Ivana Corley to improve to 10-2 in dual-match singles play, including an 8-1 mark on court 3. No. 66 Stearns followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court 1 over Carmen Corley to give the Longhorns a 3-0 cushion. Stearns moved to 8-2 in dual-match action this season.
Collins clinched the overall dual-match victory for the Longhorns with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court 5 against Marcelina Podlinska. Collins improved to 9-2 overall in singles play, including a 4-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Leading 5-3 in the first set on court 2, senior No. 5 Anna Turati rattled off seven-straight games to earn a 6-3, 6-0 win over Guzman. Turati moved to 11-2 in dual-match singles action this spring, including a 4-0 mark in Big 12 play. No. 125 Chavatipon followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court 4 against Martina Capurro to improve to 17-1 overall in singles, including a 14-1 record in dual-match play.
Freshman Malaika Rapolu closed out Sunday’s action with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win on court 6 over Motosono. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Rapolu held leads of 4-1, 7-3 and 9-6 but Motosono rallied to tie the breaker at 9-9. Rapolu then responded by winning back-to-back points to finish out her 11-9 win and move to 14-2 overall in singles, including a 7-1 mark in dual-match play.
UT returns to action when it hosts No. 34 Rice on Saturday, March 27. First serve is set for 12 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center.
