Molina Named SEC Newcomer of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s tennis sophomore Carlota Molina has been named the Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Week after going undefeated in the singles competition against Alabama and No. 21 Auburn last weekend.
 
Molina put together a pair of resilient performances in her first full weekend of conference action this season, earning a couple of come-from-behind triumphs on the No. 2 singles court.
 
Last Friday, the sophomore defeated Sasha Gorchanyuk of Alabama in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision, earning Kentucky’s fourth point against the Crimson Tide to clinch the dual match. Two days later, she defeated Yu Chen of No. 21 Auburn in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision.
 
The Gran Canaria, Spain, native improved to a 9-1 singles record with those wins, competing all of her matches on the No. 2 singles court this season.
 
The Wildcats own a 9-2 record on the year, including a 1-2 record in the SEC. Both of Kentucky’s losses have come against ranked foes, losing to No. 23 LSU and No. 21 Auburn. UK will travel to Columbia, Missouri, to meet the Tigers on Friday, March 5 at noon.
 
The SEC Newcomer of the Week honor has been established for this year only, for student-athletes who were freshmen in 2020 and are now sophomores in 2021. This award applies to baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
