EAST LANSING, Mich. — The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team stretched its win streak to 11 matches as the Wolverines topped in-state rival Michigan State, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon (March 21).

Michigan struck first with the doubles point, getting wins at No. 3 and No. 1. The Wolverines are now 9-0 when securing the doubles point. Freshman Gala Mesochoritou and sophomore Andrea Cerdan were successful in their first match togehter with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 position to put Michigan in position for the first point of the match.

Sophomore Nicole Hammond and freshman Kari Miller clinched the match’s first point for the Wolverines, getting a 6-3 win at No. 2. U-M was up 4-3 at the No. 1 spot when the match was abandoned. 

Transitioning to singles action, U-M took four first sets from the Spartans. 

Mesochoritou pushed the Wolverines to a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win by idential 6-2 scores at No. 5 singles to improve to 12-0 in singles play. Graduate student Chiara Lommer, fresh off of her 100th career singles win last weekend, added to her resume by taking down Lauren Lemonds, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.

Miller sealed the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win to put U-M’s fourth point up. Miller raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set before hanging on for the 6-3 win. The Wolverine freshman took advantage of a late break in the second set to wrap up the win. 

MSU got a point on the board with a win at No. 3.

Freshman Jaedan Brown gave the Wolerines another point with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 — her fifth consecutive singles win.

MSU won the final match on court at No. 6 to provide the 5-2 margin.

Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for a three-match homestand beginning with Penn State on Friday (March 26) at 3 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
