Michigan Cruises to Shutout of Purdue to Cap Off Perfect Weekend at VTC

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team recorded a 7-0 win over Purdue on Sunday (April 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center in the team’s first outdoor match in Ann Arbor this season. After a 4-0 win over Indiana on Saturday (April 3), the Wolverines posted a perfect weekend to improve to 11-1 in the Big Ten.

The No. 23-ranked team of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar never trailed at No. 1 doubles and cruised to a 6-2 win. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty earned their first win in their second time competing as pair with a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point for the Wolverines.

Beaty remained undefeated at No. 4 singles, winning his third match of the season by taking down Milledge Cossu 6-3, 6-2 to push Michigan ahead, 2-0. It was Beaty’s fifth straight win in singles, improving his season record to 15-3.

Fenty won his second singles match of the weekend, with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Mateo Julio at No. 1 singles. It marked Fenty’s 12th win of the season.

Connor Johnston claimed his first singles win of the season, defeating Santiago Galan 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and securing the team victory with the Wolverines’ fourth point.

Jacob Bickersteth went 2-0 in singles this weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tomasz Dudek. He is now 4-0 at No. 5 singles. Siimar closed out with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, his 13th victory in singles play this season.

With its win, Michigan extends its streak against Purdue to 18 straight.

The Wolverines will play a home-and-home series against Michigan State next weekend. The teams meet Friday (April 9) in East Lansing followed by a noon match Sunday (April 11) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
