EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men’s tennis wrapped up their annually hosted Drobac/Beeman Invitational on Sunday afternoon, competing in the fourth round of singles and doubles competition.
“Great improvement from last weekend’s tournament and perhaps against stiffer competition,” head coach Gene Orlando commented. “Each Spartan certainly gained the inches from last week to this week. Despite finishing 16-19 in singles and 10-10 in doubles I thought we competed well. We are close, and that’s exciting, and we are hungry to get back to work! Fall season is all about developing and preparing for the spring.”
The Spartans picked up another win in doubles action today and four victories in singles rounds. Luke Baylis and Anthony Pero secured another doubles win in the morning, knocking off Basavereddy and Schuleter of Indiana and Western Michigan, 6-3.
Baylis also won his singles match in the afternoon, winning in straight sets in a rematch with Basavereddy, 6-2, 6-2. Reed Crocker also won his match in straight sets when he took on Bronco foe Joaquin Caballer, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Also in the afternoon, Graydon Lair took on Marquette’s Dragovic and won in a pair of close rounds, 6-3, 6-4. Josh Portnoy battled through three sets against Brady, also of Marquette. After going up 6-4 in the first set, Portnoy lost 3-6 to force a third set. Battling to a 10-7 decision, Portnoy came away with the victory.
