Men’s Tennis Sweeps Lafayette, 7-0, to Earn First Victory of Season

ALLENTOWN, Pa.—Playing at full strength for the first time this season, Villanova (1-2) won all six singles matches in straight sets and tallied a 7-0 victory over Lafayette (0-2) at the Winning Touch Tennis Indoor Club on Sunday afternoon. Eight different players competed for the Wildcats, who earned clinching wins at the No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles positions.

“It was nice to be competing once again, especially at full strength for the first time this season,” Villanova head coach Brad Adams said. “I thought we started a little slow in doubles, but I was happy to see the guys fight through some early jitters to take control of their doubles sets. I was also very pleased about the efficiency that our guys showed in their singles matches. They placed an importance on each point and were locked in for the duration of the match.”

Sophomore Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) tallied a 6-4 win over Josh Wolfe and Noah Lovallo in the No. 2 doubles match to clinch the doubles point. They finished their match after freshman Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and junior Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) earned a 6-3 decision over Ross Coleman and Davis Esslinger. Robinson and Winton were each in the Wildcats lineup for the first time this season, with Robinson also winning his No. 2 singles point to clinch the team result.

“It is great to get our first win of the season and to see Josh and Noah get victories in their first action of the year,” Adams said. “We will continue to train hard and improve each day. We are looking forward to the next match.”

Robinson posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Kramer in his singles match, while Cheng was also a winner in both singles and doubles after tallying a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Esslinger in the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) won his No. 1 singles match (6-2, 6-2) over John Yurconic, while freshman Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) played in the No. 3 position and was the first to finish his match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wolfe.

The other winners for Villanova were senior Daniel Martinez (Coral Gables, Fla.) at No. 4 singles (6-4, 7-5) over Lovallo and sophomore Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) at the No. 6 position (6-2, 6-1) over Coleman.

Next up on the schedule for the Wildcats is a March 6 contest against Fairleigh Dickinson.
