PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey City University Gothic Knights had a trio of student-athletes recognized by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and Skyline Conference today, Monday, March 29, as the two organizations announced their weekly award winners.
Following a dominant performance in the program’s first match in 22 years, the NJCU men’s tennis program swept the NJAC East Division Player and Rookie of the Week awards as junior Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and freshman Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) were honored, respectively, by the conference. Bourghelle played a key role in the Gothic Knights’ 9-0 win over Rutgers-Camden on Friday, March 26. The junior was a part of a second doubles team that won 8-0 before making quick work of his foe at first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Teynie was was also 2-0 against the Scarlet Raptors. The rookie was part of a first doubles pair that won 8-1 before winning his second singles match, 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Hanel Collado (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), a first-year Gothic Knight who is also in his first year of collegiate competition, was named Rookie of the Week by both the NJAC and Skyline. He helped lead NJCU to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15) victory at Sarah Lawrence College on Thursday with a match- and career-high 11 kills with just one error on an efficient 16 swings (.625 hitting percentage). He also tied the match high with a career-best five digs.
Bourghelle, Teynie and the rest of the men’s tennis team return to the court on Saturday, April 10, at 12:00 p.m. for a NJAC match at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. Collado and the men’s volleyball squad are back in action this Saturday, April 3, for a Senior Day doubleheader at home against St. Joseph’s College-L.I. at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center (JMAC).
