PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite victories from its two captains at Nos. 1 and 6 singles, the Montana State women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland State on Saturday afternoon.
After dropping the opening doubles point, the Bobcats fell behind 4-0 in singles action at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 on the ladder. Laura Mary put MSU’s first point on the board with a win at the top spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lotti Meszaros. Enni Zander closed the margin to 4-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Gerda Upeniece at No. 6. The final match went to the Vikings as Emily Rees fought off Felicia Jayasapurta 3-6, 6-4 (10-8).
“Our two captains, Laura Mary and Enni Zander, are finishing out their final year, and are competing at a high level,” said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. “Their maturity is obvious in the way they practice and compete.
“Our other kids have so much they can learn from these two,” Reeves added. “It’s so easy competing and being an athlete when things are going really well, but mature competitors are able to make something happen on the days that are not so easy. Laura and Enni are proving that maturity competition to competition.”
