Local roundup: Montoursville boys tennis tops South; now 8-0 | News, Sports, Jobs

Montoursville improved to 8-0 with a 5-0 victory against South Williamsport on Monday afternoon in boys tennis.

Tyler Gilbert won for the Warriors at No. 3 singles in a tough match against Ross Flerlage, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 10-8. Andrew Stapp earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Jared Matlack won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Montoursville will travel to rival Loyalsock on Wednesday.

Hughesville’s Logan Burns defeated Central Columbia’s Jordan Baker, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, but that would be the Spartans’ only victory in a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays.

Central Columbia’s Bryce Hazzard won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4, against Mikey Dylina. Hughesville’s Austin Young fell to Brady Madden, 6-2, 6-1.

Central Mountain’s David Lindsay earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Hollidaysburg’s Nathan Barton, but the Wildcats fell, 4-1.

Ethan Hall lost at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to Brian Johnson and the Wildcats’ doubles team of Leisher Gugino and Asher Talbot fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, to Haddy Obeid and Ben Johnson.

The Wildcats (5-3) host a quad meet today at 11 a.m. against Altoona, Mifflin County and Tyrone.

Williamsport cruised past Danville for a 5-0 victory as the Millionaires won every contest, 6-0, 6-0. In singles competition, Kyle Shuler (No. 1 singles), Alex Norris (No. 2) and Zach Lake (No. 3) all were victorious.

Owen Kaar and Evan Beiter won at No.1 doubles and Hemberth Pena-Vasquez and Abheet Sarker won at No. 2 doubles.

The Millionaires (5-0) host Hollidaysburg today for a 4 p.m. match.

• After leading the Lock Haven University field hockey team to a thrilling shootout victory over nationally-ranked Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini was named this week’s A-10 Defensive Player of the Week.

On Saturday, Lock haven knocked off No. 19 Saint Joseph’s in a shootout, 1-0. Orlandini was credited with six saves, including a pair of brilliant stops in the second overtime period.

• Kyler Mellott of the Lock Haven University baseball team earned PSAC Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts over the weekend against Mansfield.

Mellott’s complete game shutout powered the Bald Eagles to a 7-0 victory Saturday. Over seven innings of shutout work, Mellott struck out five, scattering four hits.

After leading Mansfield to a pair of victories over Lock Haven, freshman Zachary Shertzer was tabbed PSAC East Athlete of the Week.

Shertzer earns his first career PSAC East weekly award and the program’s first honor since former Mountaineer standout shortstop Taylor Hillson did so in 2017.

Shertzer hit .462 (6 for 13) with two homers, eight RBIs and four runs to lift Mansfield to a pair of wins over Lock Haven University on Thursday and Saturday.
