Large indoor tennis facility opens at Michael O. Buchanon Park – News 40

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Local tennis players are making racquet about a huge indoor tennis court facility opening up at Michael O. Buchanon Park.

Warren County Parks and Recreation aced their grand opening Tuesday morning of the multipurpose facility with 12 tennis courts, six of which are inside.

These courts will also allow the play of basketball, volleyball, soccer and lacrosse.

Kris Kummer, the director of WCPR is excited to see the long awaited facility open.

“This is the largest project that we’ve done and a part of that piece, is the community support that we’ve had in regards to this facility,” said Kummer.

The facility also includes wallball, handball, a playground and more for the community to enjoy.

Nate Harlan, the president of the Southern Kentucky Tennis Association said the grand opening felt like Christmas morning.

“Tennis is just our chosen medium for how we build friendships and build a stronger community. This facility will help those of us who suffer from that seasonal affective disorder stave off those seasonal blues and maybe even burn off some of those seasonal holiday calories,” said Harlan.

The majority of indoor facilities are owned privately, but this one is publicly owned so the whole community can use it, according to Martina Fee, a board member for Southern Kentucky Tennis Association.

“It’s a sense of community. It’s a place where everyone, and I mean everyone, can come and play tennis. It’s wheelchair accessible,” said Fee

The use of the court is $4 an hour and you can check out a racket and a ball for free.

“Walk in you say, ‘Hey,’ you say, ‘Hey’ to everybody. It’s a welcoming environment and we want everyone to feel welcome here,” said Fee.

These kinds of facilities are not common in smaller counties, so the courts will bring visitors to the area to play.
