EAST LANSING, Mich. — Senior Andrew Fenty and sophomore Nino Ehrenschneider of the University of Michigan men’s tennis team claimed the doubles title at the 2021 ITA Midwest Regional Championship Monday afternoon (Oct. 25) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility and Michigan Athletic Club, hosted by Michigan State.

The pair qualify for the ITA National Fall Championship. Full selections, including at-large and wild card selections in both singles and doubles will be announced at a later date by the ITA.

Seeded No. 3 in the tournament and having gone 2-0 in other matches this fall, Fenty/Ehrenschneider received a first-round bye before knocking off pairs from Michigan State and Youngstown State. In the quarterfinals the duo took an 8-5 match from Illinois’ Hunter Heck/Lucas Horve and then topped Nic Meister/Olivier Stuart from Illinois 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. In the championship match, Fenty/Ehrenschneider took a 7-5 first set off of No. 1 seed Justin Boulias/Robert Cash of Ohio State and then finished off with a 6-2 second second.

It was a familiar setting to the last Midwest Regional, when Fenty and then-partner Mattias Siimar faced Robert Cash and John McNally from Ohio State. The Buckeyes took the match 3-6, 7-5, 10-6. Fenty/Siimar went on to place second in the consolation bracket of the ITA Fall National Championship.

Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth had a run in doubles as well, reaching the quarterfinals. The pair posted matching 8-4 wins in the second and third round before facing Meister/Stuart in the quarterfinals, falling 8-5.

Ondrej Styler was impressive in singles play, winning four straight matches to reach the semifinals. In the quarterfinals he outlasted Boulais in three sets, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 7-6 (5) to face another Buckeye, James Trotter, in the semifinal. Trotter advanced with a 6-2, 1-0 retired result.

Patrick Maloney won his first three matches to reach the quarterfinals, with wins over Pawit Sornlaksup (Toledo), Connor Fu (Notre Dame) and Kweisi Kenyatte (Illoinois). It took three sets to decide the quarterfinal winner between Maloney and Trotter, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3.
