Braswell named Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

Austin – Texas Men’s Tennis freshman Micah Braswell has been named Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 7, the conference announced Tuesday.

It marks the first conference weekly honor of Braswell’s career, giving it to the Longhorns for the second-straight week after sophomore Eliot Spizzirri received it last week. Spizzirri has earned it twice this season for a total of three for Texas players.

Braswell helped lead Texas to two road win against ranked opponents as the Longhorns won non-conference matches at No. 26 Oklahoma State (4-1) and at No. 28 Oklahoma (4-3). In singles, Braswell downed No. 86 Henrik Korsgaard at No. 3 in straight sets to clinch the overall match over OSU and earn his second-straight win over a ranked opponent. He has also held third-set leads against his previous two ranked opponents in matches that went unfinished. Against Oklahoma, Braswell moved up to No. 2 with Siem Woldeab missing the match due to injury and was key to a Texas comeback with a three-set win in which he was down a set and trailed 3-1 in both the second and third sets before rallying to win both using runs of 5-0 and 5-1, respectively.

In doubles, Braswell reunited with Cleeve Harper against Oklahoma, however it was his first time playing at No. 2. The duo responded with a 6-1 victory, opening on a 5-0 run before the Sooners picked up their lone win on serve. Against Oklahoma State, Braswell paired with Jacob Bullard for the third time this season in dual match play, but the match went unfinished. Braswell is now 26-2 overall in singles as a true freshman with an 11-1 mark in dual match play, while he is 19-7 overall in doubles and 7-3 in dual matches.

Braswell and the Longhorns complete their four-match road stretch with a visit to Rice in Houston at 1 p.m. CT on Friday.
