Chinese state media has reported that defending men’s and women’s singles world champions Ma Long and Liu Shiwen have withdrawn from the 2021 World Championships. Longtime veteran and former world number one Xu Xin will not play either. The stated reason for the withdrawal is “physical adjustment”, although it is unclear what exactly that term means.
China appears to be trying to go younger, as the final roster for the Chinese National Team is:
Men’s Singles: Fan Zhendong, Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin, Lin Gaoyuan, Zhou Qihao.
Women’s Singles: Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi.
