Derby Community Table Tennis Club’s work with Afghan refugees has been featured on BBC Radio Derby – and now the club is appealing for crowdfunding to help them do more to help disadvantaged groups.
Club member Patrick Johnstone was interviewed by the station, which put together this film about him and the club’s activities to help integrate refugees into the local community.
Now the club is planning to carry out more work with disadvantaged groups, including children from area of deprivation in the city, and has launched a crowdfunding page to help set up a series of satellite clubs and to pay for coaches to work in them.
Nick Heaps, the Chairman of the trustees at the club, said: “Our strapline is ‘bringing people together through a mutual love of table tennis’ and that pretty much guides everything we do.
“Working with refugees is part of our strategy, and working with other disadvantaged groups. The one thing stopping us and so much of what we want to do is resource.
“We’re looking for a part-time coach to set up satellite clubs across Derby, linking with ourselves as a hub, so that’s why we have launched the crowdfunding page.”
