Zhang Yufei Pulls Brutal Double

2020 TOKYO SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Double Gold for China’s Zhang Yufei

Day 5 saw China’s Zhang Yufei nail a new lifetime best in the women’s 200m fly, taking gold in a mark of 2:03.86. That ranks the 23-year-old as the 3rd fastest performer of all time.

But Zhang wasn’t done, as she had a quick turnaround time to dive back as the 3rd leg of the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay for China. And her contribution helped edge the squad to a new World Record, with the team registering a collective mark of 7:40.33.

As a nation, China now ranks 4th in the overall medal table with the swimming competition over halfway over.

Quick Hits

  • 31-year-old Ryosuke Irie sneaked into the men’s 200m back final in 8th place. The Japanese swimming icon is competing in his 4th Olympic Games, having medaled in both the 100m and 200m at the 2012 edition in London.
  • Hwang Sunwoo of Korea, just 18, placed 5th in the men’s 100m freestyle, nailing a time of 47.82. He earlier went 47.56 in the semi-final to notch a new Korean and Asian record.
  • The Japanese partners in IM crime, Daiya Seto and Kosuke Hagino, both made it into the 200m final. They’ll deal with the likes of Duncan Scott of Great Britain and Michael Andrew of the United States, among the competitors. For Seto, he disappointingly missed out on both the 400m IM and 200m fly finals, so this represents his last chance to make a podium happen at this home-based Games.
