Member of New York Breakers Tests Positive For COVID-19 Ahead of ISL Season Opener
The International Swimming League (ISL) opened its third season on Thursday with Energy Standard taking the lead in its two-day matchup with the Toronto Titans, Aqua Centurions and D.C. Trident. But there was equally big news out of the pool, as a member of the New York Breakers tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the positive test, and at the direction of Italian health officials, team members and support staff have been placed in individual quarantine.
The identity of the swimmer has not been made public and the ISL indicated that the positive result was the only one out of 300 tests conducted in Naples, which is the host city for the league’s regular season. Members of the Breakers will remain in isolation until Saturday, and athletes who return a negative test that morning will be allowed to compete during the team’s season opener against the Cali Condors, L.A. Current and Tokyo Frog Kings.
If any members of the team return a positive test on Saturday morning, they will not be allowed to compete and the team will not be able to field a full roster for its season debut. New York finished eighth in the 10-team league last season and it would sting to start Season Three with a lineup hurt by absences. Already, Michael Andrew decided to not return to the squad, leaving holes in various events.
Below is the full statement from the ISL.
