Softball Drops Pair on the Road at Saint Francis

The CCSU softball team dropped two games on the road at Saint Francis U on Wednesday. The Blue Devils were shutout for the first time of the season in game one and took the Red Flash to nine innings in game two. With the losses, Central fell to 22-11 overall and 20-6 in Northeast Conference play.

GAME ONE

Score: Central Connecticut 0, Saint Francis U 9 (Five innings)

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Blue Devil bats fell cold, collecting just one hit in five frames. Senior Kaitlin Paterson had the lone CCSU hit with a single in the first inning.

  • Kate Houghton dealt an impressive first three innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. However, the Red Flash got to the freshman in the fourth inning after Madeline Barnes hit a bases-clearing double with two outs to score three runs.

  • Saint Francis finished the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, after the team blasted three home runs and scored six. The Blue Devils were shutout for the first time this season and fell 9-0.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Game two once again began as a pitchers duel, with both teams going scoreless through the first three innings. Central’s Anaya Hunte did not allow a hit and struck out three batters in the span.

  • Kim Paterson led off the fourth inning with a single to right field and made her way to second on a throwing error. After Paige Stringer singled up the middle, sophomore Kim Howard put CCSU on the board first with a sacrifice fly. The Blue Devils then loaded the bases for Molly Bruyns, who singled through the left side and brought home a run. Meg Gorman followed Bruyns with another single, scoring the third run of the inning and giving CCSU a 3-0 edge.

  • Saint Francis found its bats in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game. Jordan Frank and Lindsay Ward drove in the runs for the Red Flash.

  • Neither team was able to score in the seventh and for the first time this season CCSU was headed to extra innings. In the ninth inning, Lauren Aubry ended the game with a walk-off solo home run to center field. Anaya Hunte dealt all nine innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven batters. It was the first loss of the season for Hunte, who now stands at 4-1.
