Premiership Dream Team – for 18th September 2021

WHEN Brandon Sweet is an old man, bouncing his grandkids on his knee, he can tell them about the time Scotland loose-head Gordon Reid had to play at tight-head for Marr because the No1 jersey was his. It may have been a horses for courses selection, but the passage of time will allow him some scope for artistic license. He’ll also be able to tell the youngsters that he registered a strong performance that afternoon as the Fullarton men put Aberdeen Grammar to the sword, and that he was subsequently named in The Offside Line’s Premiership team-of-the-week.

Meanwhile Matty Carryer once again led from the front as Hawick edged their tense Border derby against Selkirk, while Currie Chieftain youngster Gregor Scougall was excellent at tight-head for the second week running as the Malleny Park men put GHA to the sword so he retain the No3 jersey.

In the second-row, Rhys Davies of Chieftains links up with the all-action Sione Halafihi of Glasgow Hawks, while Shaun Fairbairn of Hawick is unlucky to miss out. Blindside-flanker Gregor Nelson is the third member of the Chieftains pack to make the team-of-the-week, while Jordan Lister impressed for Musselburgh to be named at open-side, and Ruairi Campbell‘s powerful running and work at the breakdown gets him the No8 jersey.

Scottish Rugby launches ‘Schools Week’ initiative

Danny Owenson controlled the game and led by example as Musselburgh squeezed a valuable home win over Edinburgh Accies, and Callum Anderson, who scored the late interception try which nearly secured a dramatic win for Selkirk at Hawick, is stand-off.

Fraser Gosse showed plenty of power when scoring his try against Jed-Forest and looks a classy proposition at inside-centre for Glasgow Hawks, while outside-centre Jamie Shedden was the star turn for Marr, which is good going given some of the company he has in that backline.

A busy afternoon, which included Jed-Forest’s opening try and a disallowed try at the end which would have snatched a win at home to Hawks, sees Robbie Shirra Gibb selected on the left wing, Scott Bickerstaff’s hat-trick for Marr sees him named on the right wing, and Kirk Ford‘s nerveless late penalty to secure Hawick’s win over Selkirk topped off an assured all-round man-of-the-match performance at Mansfield Park so he is at full-back.
