Free State Women’s Rugby clubs boosted by #BetwayCares drive

Women’s Rugby in the Free State province was given a massive boost when the #BetwayCares Skills Hub made its final stop at the Free State Rugby Union.

As part of ongoing efforts of elevating community sport development, the leading sports betting and entertainment company concluded the #BetwayCares Skills Hub, which took the form of a rugby and captain’s seminar with a donation of rugby kit to three women’s rugby clubs affiliated to the union.

Wolverines, Spartans, and Botshabelo Rugby Clubs were the three selected teams who form part of several women’s rugby clubs currently struggling to finance their own playing kit, training kit and equipment.

Expressing his gratitude to Betway’s generous contribution to the women’s game in the province, Free State Rugby Union’s General Manager, Selvyn Colby said rugby at community level needs all the assistance that it can get and brands such as Betway, who have proven to be in touch with what is happening with sport on the ground, must be applauded.

“Not a lot of attention is given to rugby at community level. The situation is far worse for the women’s game as the sport is still considered to be a man’s game. As the Free State Rugby Union, we must applaud Betway for this wonderful gesture that we believe will encourage more women participation and break the stereotypical view of women’s rugby in our communities,” said Colby.

Betway South Africa’s Marketing Manager, David Rachidi said the brand advocates for women in sport empowerment, more especially at community level.

“Since launching the #BetwayCares initiative in 2017, we have been honored to be at the forefront of affecting change in our communities. This is born out of the brand’s ethos of being a caring brand that is passionate about making a positive change and growing the standard of sport across all spheres. We thank the union for providing us with such a platform to further advance the much-needed growth of women’s sport,” said Rachidi.

Women in sport-empowerment continues for the brand later this month as it prepares to host its first ever referees course in Johannesburg which will have a strong focus on female referees.
