Jamin Davis was not supposed to be a big factor for the Kentucky Wildcats during the 2020 football season. Davis was behind Chris Oats on the depth chart prior to Oats’ tragic medical incident.
Davis stepped up to fill the shoes of a star such as Oats and surpassed every Wildcat fans’ expectations. Because of that, Davis has been vaulting up NFL Draft boards just a month out from draft day.
In the latest ESPN big board by Mel Kiper, Davis is now considered the No. 2 overall linebacker in the draft, just behind Penn State’s Micah Parsons, who is just three spots ahead of Davis overall.
Kiper has Davis as the No. 14 overall prospect in the draft.
Davis’ previous draft ranking? There wasn’t one.
Davis has gone from being a projected un-drafted prospect to now a fringe top-10 pick.
I put Davis in my Mock Draft 3.0 because he has been a hot name over the past few weeks. He’s rising and could even be the top off-ball linebacker to be picked. Davis has a big frame, and he’s a tough player who tackles. He had 89 last season, along with two picks, one sack and a forced fumble. He has some versatility and could play inside or outside. I really like his 2020 tape.
While not ranked quite as low as Josh Allen before Allen’s commitment to the Cats, Davis was the No. 915 ranked recruit in the country coming out of high school and was a low three-star recruit.
Now, Stoops and his staff will have turned two low-ranked recruits in high school into first-round NFL Draft picks just two years apart. That is something Kentucky football has never seen before.
