The Green Bay Packers fell just one game short of a Super Bowl appearance, losing a nailbiter to the championship-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One reason for their failures was the subpar play of cornerback Kevin King, who got repeatedly abused in that game. King is now back on a one-year deal with the Packers, but this should not prevent Green Bay from taking a deep look early in the draft at the cornerback position.
A hot name at this point in the process, Northwestern’s Greg Newsome II might just be an ideal fit in Green Bay as the 2021 NFL Draft quickly approaches. Here we will take a deep look at Newsome, and how he might fit best with the Packers.
Looking at the numbers of Packers target Greg Newsome II
The biggest concern with Newsome is his availability. In just three seasons with the Wildcats, Newsome played just a total of 17 games in his collegiate career. However, when he is on the field, Newsome is a dynamic and lockdown cornerback in the Big 10. He finishes his college career with a massive 20 passes defended in those 17 game and one interception.
Newsome then went on to his pro day, an event where he dazzled in from of NFL scouts and general managers. At his pro day, Newsome landed a massive Relative Athletic Score of 9.66 out of 10. On the day, Newsome ran a blazing 4.39 second 40-yard dash, hi 40 inches in his vertical jump, and over 10 feet in his broad jump. He then hit under seven seconds in his three-cone time as well. Does his ball production and athletic ability translate to the tape? We look there next.
