The new Netball Australia chief executive has taken a side on the divisive super shot that came into play in the 2020 season of Suncorp Super Netball.
New Netball Australia chief executive Kelly Ryan has made clear her stance on the controversial super shot rule in Suncorp Super Netball.
Ryan has spent 15 years in the sporting industry, with notable stints at the Gold Coast Suns and the Western Bulldogs, before taking up the role with Netball Australia.
Speaking on the divisive rule, Ryan said it was not going anywhere anytime soon.
“In terms of the super shot, I think it was a great introduction,” Ryan said.
“Understandably, it does change the dynamic of the game, and I know that sometimes that is a bit of a disruption to a lot of people in the way that the game is played.
“I think it’s incredibly important that we absolutely try new rules and try new ways because we’re not trying to talk to the exact same netball audience all the time.
“Our really good opportunity here is we’ve actually got to bring new people into the fold as well.”
Ryan also refused to rule out further changes to Suncorp Super Netball.
“I think we actually have to be open minded, and (it) challenges ourselves to actually continue to involve what that Super Netball product actually looks like,” Ryan said.
“What it will mean is we probably try things and then we move on from them.
“I think that hopefully that is OK, until we find a product that really, really works in terms of not only suiting our traditional audience but really starting to branch out and to encourage (people) to take notice of the sport.”
Ryan takes over the role from Ron Steiner, who held the title of interim chief executive since December 2020.
