Carmelo Anthony becomes 11th NBA player to score 27,000 points

Where does Anthony finish on the all-time list?

Jason Quick, Trail Blazers beat writer: If he continues to average 14 points a game this season, he should move past Elvin Hayes into 10th sometime in late April and could leapfrog Moses Malone into ninth around the final week of the season. Then, it gets tricky. In eighth sits Shaquille O’Neal, who sits at 28,596 — which will probably be more than 1,000 points ahead of Anthony at the end of the season. Anthony turns 37 in May and will become a free agent, and it’s unclear how long he intends to play. However, he is in excellent shape and has remained free of any serious injuries since joining Portland last season.

What has Anthony meant to the Blazers this season?

Quick: Anthony has not only accepted a reserve role for the first time in his career, he has thrived. And in the process, he has become an essential part of the Blazers’ late-game attack. He ranks third in the NBA in 3-pointers made in the fourth quarter (31) and twice this season he has erupted for 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead wins — once against Philadelphia and again against Charlotte. He entered Friday’s game shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point range and is the Blazers’ fourth-leading scorer at 14.1 points per game.
