Brockton-based vintage car headed to NASCAR Hall of Fame

Brockton Shoe City Auto Sales, the oldest car dealer in the city, is owned by Steve and Glenn Zimmerman. In February, they shipped their vintage Modified race car, the No. 61 Ford Pinto, which was driven by the late Richie Evans, to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will remain there until September.

Evans won nine NASCAR National Modified Championships, including eight in a row from 1978 to 1985. He lost his life in a racing accident at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia on Oct. 24, 1985.

The famous race car also was on display in Charlotte in 2012 when Evans was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

The Zimmermans also own several other vintage race cars and classics.

BUSY SCHEDULE AHEAD

A check of the upcoming 2021 Tour Type Modified Racing schedule reveals some 42 events up and down the East Coast starting April 8 at the Martinsville Speedway in southern Virginia.

The schedule includes events on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Race of Champions, Modified Racing Series, Tri-Track Open Modified Series and Opens at Thompson Speedway and Stafford Speedway.  All of these races are contained in seven months over the course of 29 weeks in 2021.

The final event will be the Halloween Howler set for Saturday, Oct. 23 at Seekonk Speedway.

We also see conflicts among different tracks over three weekends during the spring, summer and fall. Fortunately, there’s enough geography between the tracks involved that there shouldn’t be a lack of entries. However, weather issues or a spike in COVID-19 numbers could create rescheduling or outright cancellation of some of those events.

CRUISES COMING BACK IN STYLE

The MA Cruisers’ recent newsletter says there are plans to restart the Bass Pro Shop bi-weekly Thursday night cruises at Patriot Place in Foxboro on April 8 and April 27. Keep your fingers crossed that the mass COVID-19 shots at Gillette Stadium, Fenway Park and elsewhere will reduce the pandemic and the crowd restrictions.

If all goes well, the Wheels of Time Car Club also will resume its every-other-Thursday-night cruises at Raynham Park on Route 138. Also, the Connecting Rods of Scituate could also reopen their cruise night every Friday, starting May 7 at Walmart on Route 106 in Halifax.

RACE SERIES FINDS SPONSOR

The Tri-Track Open Modified Series announced a title sponsorship of All Phases Renovations of Fall River earlier this week. The six-race series is a big favorite with the Tour Type Modifieds and the fans.

MOTOCROSS GREAT NEEDS HELP

Motocross fans, the Capeway Rovers are asking for help for one of their own. Billy Dill, a lifetime member of the NESC, NCSC and AMA, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Dill, who has owned 3D racing for more than 20 years, raced his first event locally at the age of 10 and won his first championship at 15.

A statement capewayrovers.com said: “He is about to begin the race of his life and if you know Bill, you know he races full throttle, wide open, ready to win.”

Check out CapewayRovers.com to donate to his cause.

Capeway Rovers will be open the 2021 MX season on Sunday, March 28. The track is located on Plymouth St. off Route 44 southbound on the Middleboro/Carver line.
