Mets keeping tabs on C Tyler Flowers: report

Tyler Flowers

The Mets are considering Tyler Flowers as a backup catcher, according to Mike Puma of the Post.

The Post notes that the Mets have evaluated several catchers throughout spring, and aren’t very comfortable with the depth they have at the position.

The Mets did sign James McCann to a four-year, $40.6 million deal – he was the second-best catcher on the market, behind J.T. Realmuto, who re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Tomas Nido currently serves as the backup, but his career numbers are less than astonishing. He’s a career .197 hitter with a .553 OPS. Nido only had 24 at-bats last year, and missed a portion of the season after testing positive for COVID-19.

The only other catcher on the 40-man roster is Patrick Mazeika, who has not played above AA ball. Caleb Joseph and Bruce Maxwell are also in camp. Their top prospect, Francisco Alvarez, is a catcher, but is several years away from his MLB debut at just age 19.

Last year, Flowers slashed .217/.325/.348 with one home run and five RBI in 22 games as the backup to former Met Travis d’Arnaud.
