Mets third basemen J.D. Davis left Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies after being hit by pitch on his left hand.
Additional X-rays came back negative on Wednesday evening, as Davis remains day-to-day.
In the top of the second inning, Chase Anderson ran a fastball high and inside to Davis, which hit him squarely in the left hand. After being looked at by the Mets medical staff and with Luis Rojas looking on, the Mets pulled Davis from the game, as he was replaced in the lineup at third base by Luis Guillorme.
Davis had X-rays right away, as Rojas said after the game that the initial X-rays were good news, but that team doctors would perform follow-up X-rays on Wednesday.
The Mets third baseman spoke to reporters following Wednesday’s loss to the Phillies, and while his mind instantly went to the worst-case scenario when it happened, he knows the situation could have been much worse.
“Especially when that kind of situation or that kind of play happens, you think of the worst,” Davis said. “It happened to Jeff [McNeil] (in 2019) when he ended up having surgery and all that stuff. Of course, you think of the worst, but I’m glad the outcome was the best, that it wasn’t broken and that it’s just kind of a contusion, bone bruise, whatever, it’s just the swelling. Just taking it day-by-day. The swelling is the waiting game.”
Still, though, Davis can’t say for certain exactly when he’ll be back at the hot corner for the Mets.
“I have no idea,” Davis said when asked about when he might be returning. “It’s just a waiting game of the swelling, honestly. I’m not gonna put a timetable on it or anything, because I really don’t know. One day I could wake up feeling better, and the next day feel even better. I think it’s just a waiting game and keep getting my baseball stuff in, keep getting one-handed swings in with my top hand, keep seeing pitches, and just go from there.”
Through five at-bats this season, Davis is 1-for-3 with a walk and the HBP. He hit .247 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 56 games during the shortened 2020 season.
