Mets’ Carlos Carrasco suffers hamstring strain during Thursday workout

Carlos Carrasco winds up to pitch at 2021 Mets spring training

Carlos Carrasco can’t catch a break.

Just as the veteran right-hander is ramping up to make sure he is ready for his first turn in the Mets’ rotation, he suffers a right hamstring strain after throwing batting practice on Thursday, the team announced.

The injury came about during the conditioning portion of the workout, as pitching went off without a hitch. Now, Carrasco will have to undergo an MRI to assess the damage and learn where he goes from there.

After dealing with elbow soreness, Carrasco said that he would definitely be ready for his first turn. With this injury, it’s hard to imagine Carrasco will be good to go with Opening Day only a couple of weeks away.

Luckily, the Mets have the pitching depth to deal with this. Guys like Joey Lucchesi or Jordan Yamamoto can slot in for Carrasco — if it comes down to that.

No timeline can be put on Carrasco’s return to action until the MRI results come through.
