Giants’ Wotus provides Flannery update, says ‘Flan is back’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Giants third base coach Ron Wotus provided a positive update about beloved former Giants coach Tim Flannery, who dealt with complications from a staph infection in the fall of 2020.
Wotus appeared on Saturday’s episode of KNBR’s “Marty Lurie Podcast” and said he has been texting Flannery regularly.
“He’s on the road to recovery,” Wotus told Lurie. “He told me he was taking a trip — he’s going to the Grand Canyon — I think it’s this week. He’s feeling a lot better, he’s doing good. He’s going to the Grand Canyon to do some hiking and things of that nature.”
Flannery reportedly underwent at least seven surgeries last year as he was hospitalized from a severe staph infection, but it sounds like the fun-loving former coach is doing well.
The 63-year-old became a fan favorite with the Giants as he was third base coach with manager Bruce Bochy from 2007 to 2014, winning three World Series titles with the franchise. Flannery recently posted a picture of himself with Bochy and one of their trophies.
Wotus said he also spoke to Bochy this week and the former skipper shared good news.
“I talked to Boch two nights ago and he brought it up as well,” Wotus said. “I asked him, because he’s over there in San Diego near him, and he said the same thing. Flan is doing great. He’s getting ready for his trip, so I think his troubles are behind him. It was a rough go for him and I think he’s gained a lot of weight back. We’re really happy that he’s back on board.”

Flannery is also staying busy with his band, Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe, and a non-profit called the Love Harder Project, which uses music to raise money and awareness to assist victims of violence.
“You’re probably going to see him on Twitter and Facebook all those things,” Wotus said. “He has a lot of followers. I’ve seen a couple of his comments out there. Flan is back.”
